Hailey & Pat: A Mentoring Relationship That Keeps On Giving

One of the most rewarding aspects of Woman to Woman Mentoring (W2WM) is witnessing the lasting bonds formed between our mentoring pairs. When a connection extends beyond the official program and continues to thrive in real life, we know something truly special has happened. In this blog, we spotlight one such relationship—Hailey and Pat—and explore how they met, what surprised them about their experience, and how their bond has continued to grow well beyond their initial pairing.

Hailey discovered W2WM during an information session at Carroll Community College in 2023. At the time, she was studying Biology and seeking guidance for her future in STEM. After speaking with Eileen, our program coordinator, about the Women in STEM program, Hailey immediately knew she wanted to be a part of it and eagerly signed up to be a mentee.

Around the same time, Pat was introduced to W2WM during one of our signature Pop-Up Shop events at In the Streets. Drawn in by our STEM banner, she asked about the program and was excited to sign up as a mentor. As a woman in the bio field, Pat was eager to share her experiences and support another woman starting her STEM journey.

What neither Hailey nor Pat knew was how impactful their mentoring relationship would become.

Hailey was Pat’s very first mentee, and the two connected quickly. Their first meeting was over Zoom, and though Hailey admitted she was nervous at first, she soon felt completely at ease. Because of their shared interest in STEM, Pat was able to offer valuable insight into both academic and career paths.

“One of the things Pat shared that surprised me was that when I get hired by a company, I don’t have to stay in the position I was hired for,” Hailey said. “I can move around and move up within the company to find a position that’s right for me.”

Pat was equally thrilled to be mentoring someone passionate about STEM—something she didn’t get to experience with her own daughters, who chose different paths. She found energy and fulfillment in supporting Hailey’s goals and sharing both the challenges and triumphs of her own journey.

Though their mentoring began with a focus on Hailey’s academic goals, they soon discovered they had much more in common. While our Women in STEM Mentoring program is primarily virtual, Hailey and Pat went the extra mile to connect face-to-face. One memorable moment during an in-person meetup was Hailey delivering a handmade gift of crocheted animals for Pat’s three grandchildren. Another was attending our Women In Science Speak event at Hood College, where they got to celebrate women in STEM together.

When asked what advice they’d give to future participants in the program, both Hailey and Pat shared thoughtful reflections.

Hailey said:
“If you can, get to know your mentor on a deeper level than just professionally. Yes, career advice is important, but you’ll be with this person for a period of time and can learn so much more from them. Also, meet regularly and be consistent—start early to figure out what works best for both of you.”

Pat offered this encouragement for new mentors:
“Take a chance and just start. Don’t be afraid to share your challenges—be authentic with your mentee. The ups and downs of your journey are invaluable. This is the perfect opportunity to give back and uplift another woman.”

Although their formal pairing ended, Hailey and Pat continue to stay in touch. Whether it’s Pat reviewing Hailey’s resume or offering advice on applications, or simply checking in to chat about life, their connection remains strong—a true testament to the power of mentorship and mutual support.
