Mentoring Through Generations

This month, we are featuring a pair of women who have experienced the power of mentoring – shared across generations. Laurie and Sarah are a mother and daughter duo who both found Woman to Woman Mentoring at crucial points in their lives and are showcasing how mentorship can make a lasting impact.

Laurie has been involved with Woman to Woman Mentoring since 2015. After overcoming personal and professional challenges and becoming an empty nester, she felt mentoring would be the perfect opportunity to get out, stay engaged, and share her unique experiences. Since joining, Laurie has mentored multiple mentees, served on the Woman to Woman Mentoring Board of Directors, served on planning committees, and played a key role in recruiting mentors and mentees, including her daughter, Sarah.

Sarah was entering college when her mom first joined W2WM. “She [Sarah] often heard me talking about my passion for the organization and stories of empowerment. It wasn’t until many years later that she decided it was right for her and loved her experience. Now we both believe in the transformational impact W2WM can have,” Laurie reflected.

Sarah was a recent mentee in our CORE Program. Feeling stuck and in need of motivation and guidance, she looked to the same resource her mother had found so valuable. Sarah shared, “After years of my mom talking about the program, it felt like the right time for me. I needed help and knew W2W could give me some momentum.” She was looking for accountability, and her mentor stepped into that role as a personal cheerleader. “My mentor was excellent at helping me set goals for myself, and while it was a challenge to step outside my comfort zone, the last thing I wanted was to show up to our meeting each week having not made any progress. It was really powerful to have that structure and have someone supporting me from a position of kindness, empathy, and a true desire to help,” Sarah explained.

Though their experiences as a mentor and a mentee were different, both saw the positive effects W2WM and mentoring have had on their lives. Both shared:

“We’ve both been in awe of the growth that transpires in the 1:1 relationships and within these groups. We also agree there’s something really special about Amy Savitt.” Laurie

“We’ve both felt the impact of W2W. And I think she’s [Laurie] glad I ‘get it’ now!” Sarah

When asked what advice they would give to other mothers and daughters interested in Woman to Woman Mentoring, they both agreed that participating at different times is best. “Don’t do it at the same time! You want to make sure you have independent experiences,” Sarah advised. Laurie added, “it could affect how you interact in the group setting.”

What started as a way to build community connections and gain guidance turned into confidence, meaningful support, and long-lasting relationships.
