National Mentoring Month: Mentoring Matters

The mentoring relationship is a unique relationship that shapes both the mentor and the mentee. Though it’s sometimes thought of as a one-directional relationship, it usually makes a true impact on both the mentee and mentor. In this blog post, we will highlight some key takeaways from some of our mentees and mentors, and some quotes that have touched our hearts.

One of the most meaningful ways our mentors impact mentees is by sharing their experiences. By opening up about their own successes, mistakes, and lessons learned, they can support mentees on their own paths.

” My mentor supported me through a tumultuous time of transition personally and professionally. Without her support, that experience would have disrupted my path. Instead she helped me reposition myself and move forward towards my goals. ” — CORE Mentee, Ashley B.

While our mentors play an important role in assisting their mentees in their journeys, the impact of a mentee on a mentor is just as powerful. Mentees gain support and guidance, and our volunteer mentors are often left with a fresh perspective and new information.

“You would think as a mentor you’re here to support the mentees but, ‘Oh boy!’ do you learn so much from them along the way. The mentees are driven and motivated; they just need that voice to help them gain their confidence because if you have a vision, you are not right or wrong if you’re following your dreams.”  — CORE Mentor, Terez

Sometimes our mentees get so much out of the mentoring experience that they later become mentors themselves, making an impact in someone else’s life! The process comes full circle, creating a culture of mentoring and making impacts on a community.

Whether in personal growth, professional development, or progress toward long-held goals, mentorship plays a key role in helping women of  Frederick and Carroll Counties make connections, build community, learn about themselves, and gain support.

” It [ having a mentor] completely changed my life. Through W2W connections, I got my first dream job – an editor for a magazine! I grew so quickly within the role that they made another job position just for me. Now I feel so confident and I know so much, thanks to W2WM… It was the perfect opportunity for me.” — CORE Mentee, Angelica D.

“Witnessing the growth and confidence that blooms within these women is amazing and mentoring enriches us all. Sometimes you are the mentor, and sometimes you are the mentee.” — Mentor, Laurie B.

The best mentoring relationships are rooted in a commitment to mutual growth and a shared desire to help others succeed.
